The Centuries Tour

Duration: 2 Days  Cost: £149 per person

Discover eight-hundred years of conflict in Central Scotland over two days with the Centuries Tour.  We start in the thirteenth century with William Wallace’s famous victory at Stirling Bridge before moving into the fourteenth century and the site of Bruce’s, and Scotland’s, most celebrated battle – Bannockburn.  The fifteenth century finds us visiting the two possible sites for the Battle of Sauchieburn, the only battle in Scotland’s history which saw the Royal Standard flying on both sides and where a King was usurped by his son; while the sixteenth century takes us to Linlithgow Bridge where the Earls of Lennox and Arran battled to gain control of the country.  The seventeenth century brings us face-to-face with the site of one of Scotland’s most famous hero’s greatest victory: the Battle of Kilsyth, where in 1645 the Marquess of Montrose destroyed a Covenanter army to gain control of Scotland in the name of King Charles the First.  Eighteenth century warfare in Scotland is discussed with a visit to the site of the 1715 Jacobite ‘dance’ between The Earl of Mar and the Duke of Argyll at the Battle of Sheriffmuir; and 'Bonnie' Prince Charlie's last victory at the Battle of Falkirk Muir.  The tour is rounded off by bringing the history of conflict into the 20th Century with visits to the King's Park and the enigmatic Atlantic Wall: sites used to train soldiers in First World War trench warfare and in preperation for the Second World War Normandy beach landings.
